Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji [1563-1606]
Guru Arjan Dev Ji was born in the house of Guru Ram Das Ji to Mata Bhani Ji on 15th April 1563 at Goindwal Sahib.Despite being the younger than all his brothers but in qualities he surpassed all of them.Right from the childhood he had great love for simran,sewa,literature and music.Because of all such qualities his maternal grand uncle Guru Amar Das Ji called him:"Dohta Bani Ka Bohitha". Prithi chand thinking himself to be the eldest took it for grantes his access to Guru gaddi; but Guru Ram Das ji weighing the qualities gave Guru gaddi to Guru Arjan Dev ji in 1591.When at the call of Guru Amar Das Ji Guru Ram Das Ji came to Guru Chakk,along with his family.Here Guru Arjan Dev Ji devoted his full time in doing sewa of his father who in return gave Guru Arjan Dev Ji glimpses of spiritual knowledge.Guru Ram Das Ji used to listen Gurbani Kirtan from his son.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji got married to the daughter of Sri Krishan Chand of vilage mauoo in the tehsil of Phillaur.Prithi chand at not getting gaddi started brewing animosity with his father.By now the Sikhs had risen and ripened into a distinct sect which was not identical with either the Hindua or the Muslims.The Sikh annual congregations,daily katha-kirtan programmes,community kitchen and other rituals were very catchy and easy to practise.Now the Sikhs needed one central religious place and one wholistic religious Granth to follow.These mountainous works were accomplished by Guru Arjan Dev ji.He laid the foundation of Harmandir Sahib at the pond got dug by his father Guru Ram Das Ji.He founded the city Tarn Taran in 1590. in the same way in 1594,he peopled Kartar pur Jalanldhar.In the bliss of the birth of Guru Hargonind ji,he got chhehrata-wells and had the agricultural facilitied provided to the farmers.At Ramsar,Santokhsar,Darbar Sahib Tarn Taran and in Tarn Taran he got the Ashrams built for leprosy patients and also had Hargobindpur town set-up.Prithi chand tried his best to poison the mind of child Hargobind But did not succeed; similarly in order to obtain the Guru Gaddi, he approached King Akbar in Delhi but the King rejected the plea.After bribing Sulhi khan,he planned to attack the Guru Ji but Sulhi Khan died by falling into the fiery brick kiln.
Prithi Chand tried to interpolate Gurbani by using the word "Nanak" in his own poor verses.Guru Ji called the original scripture as "Dhur Ki Bani" and using some portions of the banis of the great saints and bhagats which Guru Nanak Dev Ji himself had collected during his 'udaasis', he compiled,edited and published a Granth.This entire ordeal took him four years[1601-1604].He called this Holy Granth "Pothi Parmeshar Ka Thaan" and it placed in Harmandir Sahib on 28-8-1604.Baba Budha Ji was appointed the first Granthi ji.The pilgrims,gurbani lovers from near and far started coming and had internal peace and love from the bani being recited from guru Granth.
This great effort had impact on the ulmaos and qazis from Islam.They never wanted that there should be any other scripture than their own that should become such a power ful Light House as should put their own might into danger.As long as foresighted and philanthrolic-natural Akbar lived these anti-sikh forces could not have their say but Jahagir who had given word to Murtza Khan and others about the all-pervasiveness of Islam got trapped in their poisonous words.
In his autobiography "Tauzikay Jahagiri",Jahangir wrote that he was bitterly unhappy over the shop of lies run by Guru Arjan Dev Ji and wanted to stop it at the first chances that would get to do so.When in 1605 he got power after becoming the King he had guru Ji arrested on the fault of helping prince Khusro.On 30th May 1606 on the banks of Ravi in Lahore ,he had Guru ji tortured and made him sit on the hot plates underneath which heavy fire was lit; hot sand was poured on his head and body; hence got Guru Ji martyred.Guru Arjan dev Ji laid down his life for truth and for spread of the Holy Name of Akaal Purakh.Till date no other soul in the world had been able to match the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
